Dear Parents and Students,

We are sorry to learn from SCMP that our Pooi To alumna and renowned doctor, Professor Yip Wai-fong, died in Beijing last Tuesday. Professor Yip was the founder of the obstetrics department at the PLA 301 General Hospital and continuously introduced the practices of modern obstetrics to the mainland throughout her long life.

Raised in a Christian family, Professor Yip studied at Pooi To Middle School in Guangzhou when she was young. She then furthered her medical studies at several leading universities. After World War II, she joined the PLA hospital and became Head of the new obstetrics department 3 years later. She was instrumental in reforming maternity practices, introducing epidural anesthesia in childbirth. She also edited and translated more than 10 volumes of medical reference books.

We are proud of our alumna Professor Yip, and her contribution to medicine in China. I’m sure there are thousands of Pooi To alumni diligently and wholeheartedly serving society. May this encouraging story of Professor Yip inspire you to work hard, fulfill your dream and serve others with love, integrity, purity and perseverance.
