Dear Parents and Students,

The school distributed the students’ report cards today, summarizing the academic performance of the second term. I hope that the parents will spend at least half an hour with their daughter discussing their performance in all subjects, and giving them encouragement and support in the areas where they are worthy of appreciation, so as to motivate them to strive for their best in the future. Of course, parents should also help their daughters to find areas for improvement. For example, your daughter may not have achieved the expected grades in some subjects and needs more study and practice in them. In that case, make a plan and set goals to improve the learning outcomes. Parents are welcome to contact the class teacher and social worker to receive help and support.

With the summer vacation starting, we encourage parents and students to make good use of their time to better communicate with each other, and for parents to help their daughters develop their interests, expand their horizons and improve their learning methods in order to enjoy a meaningful and fruitful summer vacation. In Hong Kong, there are many new landmarks to see such as the West Kowloon Cultural District and Tai Kwun, along with countless country parks and outdoor areas which are great for families to visit, explore and spend time together. In addition, many organizations provide Mainland exchange tours to help teenagers understand the latest developments of our country, as well as know more about the culture and lifestyle in the Mainland so as to enhance their national identity. Of course, many families may also choose to travel abroad, where they can also learn about the customs of different countries. Even by just using the Internet and other resources, they can explore anything from the natural environment to the economy of different nations of the world, which can also enrich their knowledge and broaden their horizons.

Parents can encourage their daughters to gain knowledge during the holidays. Just as today’s society is changing with each passing day, the application of data technology has become an indispensable part of life. Use the summer to understand and apply these advancements, such as artificial intelligence and 3D scanning and printing. Parents can also encourage their daughters to read and understand data and analysis more, and train to evaluate the validity, reliability and authenticity of data, so as to build the ability to analyze and evaluate information and data effectively. When the information, media and data that a teenager is exposed to are biased or untruthful, correct decisions and appropriate actions can still be produced if the information literacy of the student is competent. I believe that training to gain a broader knowledge of information analysis is a meaningful task for our girls over the summer vacation

Of course, as role models, parents should actively be involved in this task with their daughters. As with everything in life, parents should always set a good example. This is also true in daily life with mobile phone usage. Many teenagers can't put their phones down and persistently play games on them, message friends and are addicted to online videos and social media platforms. It is even normal to see families dining in restaurants on their mobile phones in dead silence with no communication. If parents do not first stop playing on their own mobile phones and set an example to their children, the lines of communication can break down and the relationship can become fragile.

The summer vacation can be a time of crisis or opportunity. It is a time for you to find opportunities to build a good relationship with your daughter and expand her interests and potential. Walk with your daughter, discuss how to make good use of time, make a plan and work it out. I hope we all have a fruitful summer vacation.

Best regards,
Constance Cheung
