25 January 2024

Dear Parents and Students,

The implementation of the garbage levy measures originally scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2024, have been postponed until August 1. The government is actively working on educating and raising awareness among the public about the details of this measure. As a school, we are committed to supporting these government policies by strengthening environmental education and improving our school's environmental facilities. Our aim is to foster a greater sense of environmental responsibility and create a truly "green campus."

During the 2022/23 academic year, our school participated in the "Green Campus 2.0" project, which included the "Green Campus 2.0 - Solar Harvest" initiative. This government-led program aims to support the adoption of solar energy projects in schools and non-governmental welfare organizations as part of the local renewable energy development plan. The program, provided free of charge, offers comprehensive services for the installation of solar power systems through the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department. We are pleased to inform you that the installation work has been completed, enabling the school to participate in the CLP Company's feed-in tariff plan and sell the renewable energy generated by our solar panels back to the power grid. This program not only educates students about climate change but also encourages the increased use of renewable energy, aligning with our goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. We strongly encourage students to deepen their understanding of the importance of renewable energy.

Furthermore, our school has also participated in the "Green Campus 2.0 – Energy Smart" program, another government initiative. This program aims to support the replacement of approximately 100 air conditioners with energy-efficient variable frequency units and over 1,500 conventional fluorescent tubes with energy-saving LED lights. Additionally, a real-time energy monitoring system will be installed to provide students with insights into energy consumption within each classroom and the entire school. This information will empower students to take appropriate measures and actively participate in reducing carbon emissions. The implementation of this project is scheduled for mid-2024.

In addition to these initiatives, our school has introduced various other environmentally friendly facilities & procedures. Three of them are listed below.
(1)    Starting from February, water dispensers equipped with lead removal water filters and disinfectant systems will be installed in the student canteen and near the lift on the Third Floor. This encourages students to develop the habit of bringing their own water bottles, reducing the consumption of packaged, bottled and canned drinks, and ultimately minimizing plastic waste.
(2)    In addition to the bins by the student canteen, three-color sorting recycling bins have been placed near Stairwell No.2 on the Ground Floor. These bins are designated for the collection of aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and waste paper. Students are educated on the proper procedure of rinsing and crushing aluminum cans and plastic bottles before disposal. Each classroom is also equipped with a waste paper recycling box. Students are encouraged to flatten the paper and place it in the designated box. The students on duty will sort and collect the waste paper at the end of each school day, promoting resource recovery and recycling habits.
(3)    The Canteen is going to use paper lunch boxes instead of plastic ones. After consuming their lunch, students are required to return the lunch boxes to the recycling collection bin in the student canteen.

Alongside these specific measures, we will continue to strengthen environmental education through various initiatives such as organizing environmental lectures, arranging visits to environmental facilities, and hosting environmental activities. We firmly believe that these efforts will help students develop a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental protection and encourage their active involvement in environmental conservation.

Finally, we urge students and parents to join us in taking part in environmental protection actions. You can start by making small changes in your daily lives, such as reducing the usage of single-use plastics, conserving water and electricity, and practicing proper waste sorting and recycling. Each individual's effort contributes to the collective goal of environmental preservation.

We wish you a year filled with heightened environmental awareness and engagement.

Best regards,
Constance Cheung
