I joined the exploratory tour of urban planning and economic development in Guangzhou. It is a rare opportunity to go to the Guangzhou Urban Planning Exhibition Center to learn about Guangzhou's general situation, city history, master planning, transportation and municipal administration, key development areas, urban science, urban planning and much more. It gave a vivid demonstration of the context of the city's construction and development.

We then went to GRG Banking Equipment Company Limited, a high-tech listed company that has ranked first in China's ATM counterfeit machine market sales share for many consecutive years. We were able to see with our own eyes the high-speed currency intelligent counterfeit identification capabilities and the high-speed separation of new and old banknotes. The operation behind the machine also integrates the verification methods of ticket vending machines and railway projects that require card processing technology and facial recognition with finger prints, QR codes, and ID card-specific radio frequency cards to produce high speed and accuracy. We could also personally test the sensitivity of the smart security door, which can clearly display the location of metal objects on our body. I really appreciate Guangzhou’s fruitful scientific research results and their application in daily life. The country’s scientific and technological development is really advancing leaps and bounds. I am convinced that with the country's backing, Hong Kong will play an important role in the development of the Greater Bay Area.

The following day, we visited Nanhai Experimental Middle School together. The teaching equipment and facilities were complete and built according to the provincial first-level school standards. Taking the smart library as an example, the facial recognition system is used to borrow books without manual management. I have always admired the mathematics and science education in China. The depth and breadth of the courses are world-renowned. From the international assessments of TIMSS and PISA, Chinese students have performed well. However, what I appreciate this time is the school’s art education. According to the students’ interests, each student is required to have more than one outstanding specialty. The school specially offers dance, piano, guzheng, percussion, painting, calligraphy and various specialty training classes in ink painting, printmaking, photography, and television production. This allows every student to develop their interests and hobbies. The school also provides sufficient equipment support. For piano alone, the school has more than 10 piano rooms for students to play after school. Being able to practice your art and show it off are vital for the pursuit of excellence.

I hope that students will cherish every opportunity to participate in the Extended Learning Day, accept new things with an open mind, enhance their knowledge, and broaden their horizons and thinking.

Best regards,
Constance Cheung
