Dear Parents and Students,

In September 2019, the school was honored to be invited by Dr Liu Tik-sang, the Director of the South China Research Centre of the HKUST, commissioned by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department to conduct a territory-wide survey of the intangible cultural heritage of Hong Kong, to share our experiences of maintaining the tradition of wearing white cheongsam as a school uniform and also running a programme for making cheongsam. From the influence of Chinese culture built into our school, our girls have always naturally had a sense of mission to spread Chinese cheongsam culture. During the interview, the teacher shared the goal of running the cheongsam making class and discussed their dedication to teaching and preserving the craftsmanship of cheongsam, hoping to achieve an effective living inheritance. The students also shared the joy and sense of achievement of learning the cheongsam making process. When encountering difficulties, the master guided them through every small step. Since the skillset needed is unique, they felt the challenge, and also the determination and perseverance needed in this craft.

The school has also been committed to promoting the culture of cheongsam to primary school students. It has held the “Pooi To Qiapo Design (Primary Section) Competition” for 6 years now. Primary students can taste the exquisite and elegant design of cheongsam, which is rich in cultural connotation, aesthetics and wisdom.

We are delighted that the "Technique of Making Hong Kong Cheongsam " was included in the fifth batch of representative projects of "National Intangible Cultural Heritage" on June 18, 2021, affirming the efforts of Hong Kong people to preserve and promote local intangible cultural heritage. This encourages our students to continue to spread the traditional culture of Hong Kong.

In recent years, we have also actively promoted Hanfu, which has a more distant and long history. With the change of dynasties, the cultural clothing of Hanfu tells its own story. We have held activities with teachers and students from a number of schools, to allow teachers and students to experience different dynasties and gain a deep understanding of their history. The evolution and characteristics of Hanfu, as well as traditional etiquette, styles of Hanfu, classic hair accessories, etc., enhance students' understanding of Chinese history and culture, and encourage them to uphold traditional Chinese culture.

During the summer vacation, I took a leisurely tour to the Hong Kong Palace Museum. We are very lucky to see the exquisite collection of national treasures without leaving Hong Kong. Among them, the "Forbidden Day" exhibition hall, which displayed more than 300 pieces, allowing the visitors to understand life in the Forbidden City from day to night, explore not only the rich materials and spiritual life, but also the lessons that can be learnt from historical successes and failures when facing future challenges.

As members of the Pooi To Family, I hope that we also have a sense of mission to take our heritage into the future.

Best regards,
Constance Cheung
Principal
