Today, our S1 Geography Field Trip was successfully completed as students explored Long Valley and Ho Sheung Heung in the New Territories, embarking on an enriching journey to study ecology and land use. At the newly opened “Long Valley Nature Park”, students observed the wetland ecosystem up close—golden rice paddies, blooming water lilies, and clusters of arrowheads. They were even delighted to spot rare bird species like black-winged stilts from the birdwatching hide, gaining firsthand experience of wetlands’ irreplaceable value as the “kidneys of the Earth”.

We were also honored to have Ms. Wong Chat Dei, Chairwoman of the Hong Kong New Territories Local Agriculture Association, as our guide! She vividly shared the century-old farming history of Long Valley and led students through her organic farm, comparing traditional and organic farming methods. Through her insights, students gained a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s food security challenges and the dedication of local farmers in preserving this fertile land. Later, students visited Ho Sheung Heung, where they analyzed the flood prevention design of the Beas River’s artificial channels. Applying their classroom knowledge, they recorded rural land use characteristics and compared them with Kowloon City, clearly recognizing the differences between urban and rural areas. To conclude the trip, everyone enjoyed a bowl of Ho Sheung Heung’s famous silky-sweet tofu pudding—a perfect ending to a day full of learning!
