Junior Reporter @ SCMP
Eunice
Working as a junior reporter for the Young Post Magazine of the
South China Morning Post was always going to be an exciti ng and
stimulating experience. Of all the assignments we were given this
was one of the best, not least because of the lollipop on top of the
tree!
I would love to have a pair of Beats Solo 2 wireless headphones so I
applied myself diligently to this very challenging questi on. Out of all
the laws in Hong Kong, which one most needs changing?
In this heat of the competition, the 3 of us each chose a
controversial issue. Housing is always high on everybody’s list of
concerns. In the wake of the “fi shball revolt,” hawkers’ licenses are
once again a hot topic. As for “latchkey kids”, those of us who go
home to an empty house and break the law by so doing, know that
this law is an anachronism.
- Well, I didn’t win the headphones but I made 2 very good
friends!
- Trust me, journalism is fun
See if you can decide which one of us said what and which is the
best idea?

Elena
Hello everyone. I am Elena from Italy.
I’m on a 1-year exchange programme at the moment in Hong Kong and I’d just like to tell everyone
that it’s the most amazing experience I’ve ever had!
Leaving my family, home, friends and everything familiar to me was something that I hadn’t really
thought of before I left Italy. Living far away from home, on the other side of the world, has made
quite an impact on my growth. Ever since I have arrived in Hong Kong, it’s like I have come out
of my shell, becoming more independent and confi dent in myself and the choices I make. Being
here and experiencing a diff erent culture, a diff erent lifestyle and a diff erent language has given
me another percepti on of life. I am so much more aware of the world now and when I get back, I
cannot wait to share all of my new knowledge.
In additi on, I have greatly expanded my social circle and made lifelong friends. Such friendships
have been forged not only with my wonderful host family but also with my schoolmates in Pooi To,
fellow exchange students and my coordinator. I now feel more comfortable approaching strangers
and fi nd it easy to make new friends.
In September 2016, I had the opportunity to take part in the Hong Kong Children’s Symphony
Orchestra and this remarkable experience has enlightened me to decide exactly who and what
I want to be. Interestingly, from this exchange experience I have developed a strong sense of
wanderlust - I feel as if I need to be in a career that allows me to travel frequently all over the
world.
Last but not least, travelling overseas has given me greater awareness of my own national
identi ty. I am now always looking at things from a broader point of view. My world has expanded
significantly and with it I personally have also expanded in terms of intellectual and mental
maturity.
Escaping your comfort zone is a bit scary at fi rst, but I’ve realized that it is actually an opportunity
to try new things and hence to stretch your strengths.
