Perseverance Makes the Difference
Perseverance Makes the Difference
Being given the opportunity to be involved in English outside of the classroom is essential for improving fluency and
confidence, two things that we value highly here at Pooi To. That is why the English Activities Committee does its best
to provide opportunities to use English as much as possible, and with this year’s slogan being ‘Perseverance Makes the
Difference’, we have strived to offer ample opportunities for students to put this into practice when it comes to English usage.
Whether it be public speaking in morning assemblies, performing in the Speech Festival or creating and playing game
booths for English Day, each activity and competition have had their own challenges that have required perseverance in
order to make the difference. Let’s see what two of our chair ladies have to say about their experiences in the EAC.

Time flies when you are having fun, and it has already been
Morning Assembly a year since I became a chairlady of the EAC. Looking back
over the year, I am grateful that I have had this opportunity
to serve as a member of this wonderful and self-believing team.
One thing I can take from this is that the EAC has changed my
perspective on presentations. Previously, being an introvert, I
seldom undertook speeches in front of crowds. However, I can
th
now deliver a fluent speech with confidence, like at the 135
Pooi To Anniversary show where I was an MC. I hardly get
nervous anymore, instead, I truly enjoy the stage.
Another remarkable memory is organising activities for our
Speech Festival school. For example, on our English Day we provided some
booths for students to enjoy, but what's more, we even
organised an activity at the Chinese Lunar New Year festival!
I also really like the one minute presentations in morning
assemblies, where different members take turns to share
something on stage, allowing us to practise English in a variety
of ways. I am thankful that the EAC has become a part of my
life and I will never forget these treasured days as a crucial
part of the EAC.

Being one of the chair ladies of the English Activities
Committee this year has really been an eye opener. Not only
did I get to host and participate in multiple events, it has
been a rewarding journey as I get to encourage students of
various forms.
Although English is my second tongue, I enjoy using it to speak
to people of different backgrounds. Joining the committee
allows me to train my speaking skills and interact with more
people. On English Day, I had the chance to promote the
language and our committee through asking questions relevant
Language across the Curriculum x English Fair to science and daily life. It was a joyful day knowing that every
participant was having fun at the booths. Many were eager
to collect stamps and answer questions, not only to redeem
prizes but also to know more about English usage in different
subjects.
Another benefit of joining the EAC is that it has allowed me
to overcome my stage fright. Public speaking has never been
an easy task for me, but as the chairlady, promoting the club
on stage is unavoidable. Only with the help of my teammates
and teachers was I able to overcome my fear and practise my
presentation skills. I am grateful to have such caring partners,
which is another reason why I have no regrets being a part of
the committee.
Through joining hands with the school to enhance and deepen
the skills and interests of students in English, I believe that
the EAC will continue to strive in future projects. Though the
journey was short, I enjoyed every moment of the activities
hosted by the committee and am thankful for the opportunity to
promote English around the campus.
