I noted from the television recently that it is 100 years since English women won the right to
vote. As Pooi To celebrates 130 years educating young women, it may be time to take stock of how
far we have come and how far we have to go to create a society we can all be truly proud of.
Notably, for Pooi To this is the year of “Wonder”. This remarkable book was promoted by the
PTA to focus our attention on the issues of perception and acceptance. I know it has proved a great
catalyst to the development of the Pooi To moral compass. We have all been enriched by acknowl-
edging the issues raised by “Auggie” and his family and friends.
This is perhaps just as well since, in the wider world, powerful people have been propagating
a message that challenges our morality. When world leaders unashamedly practise racial profi ling,
we know we must dig deep into our own moral character to gainsay these bullies.
