Language Arts: Learning English through DRAMALearning English through DRAMA
Language Arts:
Based on the 1988 children’s novel by Roald Dahl, the movie Matilda became an international box office hit. Following
its success, Matilda the Musical hit theatres around the world, and in the first term of this academic year, the S1 students
of Pooi To produced their artistic take on the children’s classic. Each of the eight groups delivered a different scene, and
when combined, they told the story of a young girl, who with courage and determination, utilised her talents to overcome
adversity. With weekly drama lessons from Mr Chris and Ms Moon, they learnt to enjoy language learning, express
themselves through drama and enhance their confidence in using English. Putting together props and costumes and
honing in on their acting skills, they put on a performance to be remembered. The judge gave out the following awards.
S1 Drama Competition - Matilda
1A Joanne Hung
I really enjoyed playing
Matilda. I have learnt the
importance of teamwork, acting
and the use of an appropriate tone
to express the characters. This
also boosted my confidence in
performing on stage.
1C Chole Chan
Drama is a mode of fictional
representation through dialogue
and performance. I think we were
not well prepared for this drama
competition, so I hope we can have
it again next year to improve.
1B Emily Fung
At first, I felt challenged
as being a part of the play was
new to me. But then, I learned how
to be brave on the stage. Also, I
learned some brand-new knowledge,
like using my body language to
make my performance
stronger.
1D Constance Chan
In the drama competition,
I played the role of Matilda. I
found the drama class so funny and
interesting.I really liked having the
drama classes and the teacher was
friendly too .
