Q1: Does the school offer classes taught in English? What are the criteria for class allocation?
A: Yes, three classes in each junior form use English as the medium of instruction (EMI). Except for Chinese, Chinese History, and Putonghua, all subjects in these classes are taught in English or in Chinese with extended English learning activities. At the end of each academic year, students are allocated to classes for the next year based on their academic performance (e.g. English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science) and teachers’ recommendations.
Q2: The Fine-tuning Policy for Medium of Instruction been implemented at the school since 2010/11. What additional support is provided for students?
A: Mathematics and Integrated Science in three classes per form are taught in English, and more English elements have been incorporated into other subjects. Extra teachers have been hired for supporting bilingual educationEnglish drama activities and entended Mathematics and Science Programme have been implemented to support students in English learning. These supportive measures have been recognized by the EDB School Review Team in October 2010.
Q3: Does the school have elite classes or special programmes for gifted students?
A: Class allocation is based on students’ learning abilities to best meet their needs. Enrichment programmes for gifted students are offered in core subjects to help them reach their full potential and broaden their horizons. High achievers are invited to join the Excel Programme, which includes participation in external activities and competitions, leadership training, exchange programmes, and gifted education opportunities.
Q4: How many students apply for S.1 each year, and how many places are available?
A: Over the past five years, Pooi To has received approximately 500 applications annually for 41 S.1 places.
Q5: What are the admission criteria? Are there any special preferences for religion, relatives, or alumni parents?
A: Admission is based on academic performance, conduct, service, awards, extra-curricular activities, and interview performance. No special preferences are given to applicants. However, applicants may inform the school if they have sisters currently studying at Pooi To.
Q6: Is an interview required? What is the format?
A: Yes, an admissions interview is part of the application process. Both English and Chinese proficiency will be assessed through discussions on current issues and situational questions.
Q7: When will applicants be notified of the results?
A: Parents of applicants on the Successful List for S.1 discretionary places will be notified by letter and phone on 31 March 2020.
Q8: If an applicant is not offered a discretionary place, will they have a higher priority in the third round of applications?
A: Pooi To offers a third round of admissions each year based on need. Details will be posted on the school website in May or June.
Q9: Are places reserved for Pooi To Primary School students?
A: Pooi To Primary School is our nominated primary school and is co-educational. However, the number of girls admitted from Pooi To Primary School is limited. Our students come from a variety of primary schools. We offer adaptation programmes to help new students adjust to our learning environment and foster a harmonious and supportive community.
Q10: What are the benefits of studying in a girls’ school?
A: Pooi To has provided educational opportunities for girls since 1888 and is now a renowned girls’ school in Hong Kong. Research shows that students in single-sex schools often benefit academically, are more focused, and are more willing to express their views, especially in science subjects. They also have more opportunities to take on leadership roles. At Pooi To, students can also participate in joint-school activities, exchange programmes, and voluntary services with boys’ schools. As a Christian school, we provide sex education from S.1 to help students develop positive values based on biblical principles.
