Gifted Education

Introduction: Discover Potential · Enrich Talent · Pursue Excellence

Pooi To Middle School firmly believes that every Pooi To girl possesses unique potential and strengths. To enable students to unleash their potential and pursue excellence across different learning domains, the school adopts the “Three-tier Implementation Model” from the Education Bureau for gifted education and systematically implements gifted education through school-based whole-class teaching, school-based pull-out programmes, and off-school support.

In regular lessons, teachers infuse the core elements of gifted education — higher-order thinking skills, creativity, personal and social competence — and cater for learner diversity through flexible grouping, differentiated instruction, enrichment and extension programmes. For students who demonstrate high ability or potential in individual subjects or specific domains, the school provides school-based enhancement programmes, academic leadership development, and competition training to help navigate their development. Meanwhile, the school continues to identify and nominate students with potential for gifted programmes and academic activities organised by the Education Bureau, universities, and academic institutions, creating more learning opportunities and broadening their horizons.

We expect Pooi To students not only to pursue academic excellence, but also to cultivate their competence in creativity, communication and collaboration, leadership, problem-solving, and self-directed learning. Thus. they can realise their potential on different platforms.

GEMS Programme
Gifted Education in Mathematics and Science

The GEMS Programme is designed for S1 to S3 students who demonstrate outstanding performance in Mathematics and Science, a proactive learning attitude, a willingness to embrace challenges, and strong time-management skills. Through after-school Mathematics enrichment and Science experiment-design activities, the programme unleashes the innovation and technology potential of high-achieving students, encouraging them to deepen their learning in various internal and external activities and competitions to continuously strive for excellence.

EXCEL Programme

The EXCEL Programme is our school-based enhancement programme in the language domain. It provides extension and enrichment opportunities for S2 and S3 students who show great talent in Chinese or English. The programme aims to encourage them to excel in language mastery, creative expression, and public speaking.
Beyond programme-based training, Pooi To actively provides high-ability language students with opportunities to apply their learning and participate in diverse competitions. Through internal selection, targeted training, and participation in external language activities and competitions, students strengthen their linguistic skills, creative expression, collaboration,  and public speaking.

Subject-based Enhancement Programmes (Senior forms)

To cater to the diverse learning needs of senior form students, Pooi To arranges subject-based enhancement and consolidation programmes. Assorted subjects are split into distinct groups according to students' abilities and learning needs. This includes enhancement groups for higher-achieving students to deepen their subject knowledge, master advanced examination and analytical skills, and prepare thoroughly for public examinations and further studies.

Academic Prefects

Pooi To is committed to fostering a strong academic culture and encouraging students to pursue excellence across different learning domains. Through the appointment of Academic Prefects, student academic leaders are nurtured to put the concept of “students leading students” into practice.

Through a wide range of training and practical opportunities, Academic Prefects organise study groups and the reading sprout alliance, share self-learning tips, coordinate Chinese Cultural Day, participate in inter-school exchanges and academic competitions, and help organise campus academic activities. Through these experiences, they develop and apply generic skills while strengthening their communication, collaboration, event-planning, and leadership abilities.

Study Group

Academic Prefects lead and organise study groups for junior-form students. By matching stronger students with those who need more guidance, the scheme promotes peer support and interactive learning. In the process, the Academic Prefects strengthen their communication and presentation skills, cultivate patience and empathy, learn to adapt their guidance to different learners, and achieve mutual growth through peer teaching.

Reading sprout alliance— Language across the curriculum

In collaboration with the Reading Promotion Team and various subject departments, Pooi To implements the reading sprout alliance, training Academic Prefects as peer-reading leaders to conduct guided-reading activities. This year, Victor Hugo's classic Les Misérables is used as the core text, integrating History, English Language, reading and values education. Through guiding questions, discussion, and interactive activities, the programme fosters interest in reading and encourages junior-form students to learn through literature.

The school continues to identify and nominate students with high potential for gifted programmes and competitions organised by the Education Bureau, universities, and academic institutions. These challenging external enrichment and extension opportunities broaden students' horizons to help them further realise their academic and personal potential.

These opportunities include:

  • Gifted programmes and talent development offered by The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE);
  • The Dual Program offered by The Center for the Development of the Gifted and Talented, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST);
  • Seasonal programmes offered by the Program for the Gifted & Talented (Faculty of Education) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, alongside enrichment programmes from other tertiary institutions;
  • External courses and workshops covering various academic subjects, STEM, creativity, languages, leadership, and specialised expertise.

Competitions are not merely about winning awards; they provide a vital platform for students to put knowledge into practice, understand their own abilities, and learn from peers beyond the classroom.

Pooi To actively identifies talents in different areas, provides targeted training, and nominates students for external competitions according to their interests. In recent years, students have participated in various fields—including innovation and technology, artificial intelligence, Business, Economics, Mathematics, Science, Language, public speaking, national security, and civic education— to showcase their strengths across multiple dimensions.

Pooi To is committed to making gifted education accessible to all. Through a variety of form-wide and whole-school learning activities, students are provided with stimulating experiences through which potential in different domains can be identified.

Inter-class Academic Quiz Competitions (Junior Forms)

Themed inter-class academic competitions are organised for S1 to S3. The content integrates school history, Chinese culture, the Basic Law, national security, and relevant subject knowledge, allowing students to apply what they have learnt in a holistic context.

Pooi To actively seeks diverse learning experiences for students. Through University Visits, the Inter-School Exchange Programme, job shadowing, and other experiential activities, students step beyond the classroom to immerse themselves in different learning environments and professional fields. These experiences broaden their horizons and encourage them to reflect on their interests, abilities, and future aspirations.

University Visits

Visits to local universities allow students to tour campuses and research facilities, learn about the distinctive features and admission requirements of different departments, and exchange views with Pooi To alumnae studying at various institutions regarding subject choices and university life. These experiences inspire students to plan their future studies and career paths at an early stage in light of their aspirations while prompting self-reflection and personal growth.

Inter-School Exchange Programme

Through the Inter-School Exchange Programme, students step beyond their own campus into a brand-new learning environment. They not only explore and express their potential in new surroundings, but also gain first-hand experience of different campus cultures, atmospheres, and teaching styles. This programme provides fresh insights into their learning, enhances their communication and social skills, making it a highly rewarding experience.
